Small Press Index

If you regularly visit Speculative Fiction Junkie, you may have noticed that our reviews increasingly feature the output of the many excellent small presses operating today. This page provides information about the various small presses whose work has been reviewed here, including summaries of each featured press, reviews of their work available at this site, contact info, and, where available, interviews.

Midnight House Press

Midnight House Press was co-founded by the editor, publisher, and author John C. Pelan. It published classic horror fiction and is the publisher responsible for publishing some of the best and most elusive titles to see print in recent years, including the #1 book on my must-but-can't-find list, My Own Private Spectres by Jean Ray. Sadly, the press seems to be inactive and their website is on longer up. This is a real shame because Midnight House was filling a void that no one else was.

Tartarus Press

Tartarus Press was one of the first small presses whose work I encountered and read on a recurring basis, and it has remained one of my favorites ever since. Located in the United Kingdom, the folks at Tartarus have been churning out works of supernatural fiction by both classic and contemporary authors for years. Their works are known as much for their physical quality as for that of their authors. The press has won numerous awards, including most recently a Stoker award for Excellence in Specialty Press Publishing. While I know them only through their fiction, Tartarus also publishes a Guide to First Edition Prices as well as Wormwood, a semi-annual journal on fantastic, supernatural, and decadent literature.
