Saladin Ahmed

I'll admit it: the thing that grabbed me about acclaimed short story writer Saladin Ahmed's debut novel, Throne of the Crescent Moon, was the cover. The cover art is undeniably eye-catching; cartoonish but appealing at the same time.

I had never read the work of Mr. Ahmed before, but was familiar with his reputation as an up-and-coming short story writer. Based on the cover and some synopses I read, I was expecting an adventure-laden fantasy tale set in a refreshingly non-European setting.

What I found, unfortunately, is that I just couldn't get into this book. While the setting is different, the worldbuilding just wasn't deep enough to draw me in. The characters also felt shallow and the pacing too slow. I'm looking forward to trying Mr. Ahmed's future work, but this one just wasn't for me. It seems I may the only one to feel this way, though, as the book has received largely positive reviews.

Maybe I missed it, but I'm curious if you finished the book? Or how far do you get into a book before you know enough is enough and it just isn't for you?

It varies depending on the book. In the case of this particular book, I got to about page 80.
